The best times to use STAR are when going from thought to action – identifying a patient, entering data into a device or computer, documenting a thought or value, connecting tubing or leads and any time before taking action with a patient.
Here are some examples of when to use STAR:
- Always check that the call light is in reach before leaving a patient’s room.
- Always confirm correct patient name and DOB before entering data in an EMR.
- Always double check an important email before hitting SEND.
- Always lock your computer when you walk away to protect confidential information.
